Neurotoxins vs. Dermal Fillers
What’s the Difference between Neurotoxins and Filler?
Even though dermal fillers and neurotoxins both reduce wrinkles, they work in completely different ways.
Fillers minimize the lines and wrinkles caused as the skin loses both its elasticity and its youthful volume. When injected, fillers restore volume where it’s been lost to create a smoother appearance.
Neurotoxins, on the other hand, addresses “dynamic wrinkles” — those caused by the repetitive contractions of facial muscles as we change expressions. Neurotoxins, also known as a neuromodulator, temporarily immobilizes those tiny muscles.

What is XEOMIN®?
Made by Mertz Pharmaceuticals, XEOMIN® is derived from the botulinum molecule, which has the ability to temporarily interrupt nerve signals and nerve activities in muscles. This, in turn, leads to the muscles having a temporary reduction in activity, smoothing out lines and wrinkles.
The FDA approved XEOMIN® to be used to treat cosmetic concerns such as frown lines between the eyebrows. Like BOTOX®, XEOMIN® can also treat dynamic facial wrinkles. For visible signs of aging that do not quality for this treatment, our experienced medical team may suggest alternative treatments during your consultation.
What Can XEOMIN® Treat?
XEOMIN® is solely designed to treat dynamic wrinkles. Those are the wrinkles that appear when you make common facial expressions. Common examples of facial dynamic wrinkles include:
- Crow’s Feet
- Smile Lines
- Wrinkles around Your Nose
- Forehead Wrinkles
- Wrinkles between the Eyes
All of these wrinkles are caused by the movement of the muscles underneath your skin. XEOMIN® addresses these wrinkles by minimizing how much your facial muscles in the treated area will move.
What Are the Risks?
XEOMIN® has been used by more than 85,000 people around the world and has been approved by the FDA. However, as with all medical procedures, there are some risks of side effects. Most risks are minor and include things like bruising, skin reddening, and itching. In the rare instances where they are present, the above mentioned symptoms usually dissipate within 48 hours.
For patients who qualify, side effects are typically minimal and subside within 24-48 hours after treatment. Most patients are also able to immediately return to normal activities afterward.
Am I a Good Candidate for XEOMIN®?
Good candidates for this treatment should be over the age of 18 and have frown lines or other dynamic wrinkles they want to treat. They should be in good health and not allergic to any of the products being used. Individuals who suffer from neurological or muscular diseases may not qualify as a candidate for XEOMIN®. Women who are nursing, pregnant, or planning to get pregnant may be advised to wait before receiving treatment. During your scheduled consultation, we will be able to discuss all of the benefits as well as candidacy requirements for using XEOMIN®.
The entire treatment should take no more than 30 minutes, with results that are typically visible a few days afterward. However, it can take up to a month for the full results to be seen. The results may last for up to four months.
Our medical team has helped many individuals regain their confidence in their appearance by using XEOMIN® and our wide range of other neuromodulators.
