How Does Microneedling Work?

August 16, 2022 by A Younger You

Microneedling

Microneedling is consistently one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the United States. This option can stimulate collagen and help with a variety of skin concerns, making it an excellent treatment to consider if you have signs of aging, scarring, or even pigmentation issues.

We offer microneedling at A Younger You Medical Spa. Learn more about how this option works, what the microneedling benefits are, and what to expect from the procedure.

Understanding the Microneedling Procedure

To understand how microneedling can provide the results you want, it is crucial to first know about collagen and elastin.

Collagen and elastin are two proteins that your body naturally makes. They perform many functions, but one of the most crucial is keeping your skin firm, healthy, and hydrated.

The production of collagen and elastin decreases as you age, which makes it more difficult for your skin to retain its youthful smoothness. A decrease in elastin and collagen is what leads to wrinkles, fine lines, and even the loss of facial volume.

Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, works to stimulate your body's natural systems to create more collagen and elastin. It does this by using tiny needles to puncture the skin at the treatment areas, jump-starting the healing process.

This allows healthier and firmer skin to grow in the place of the damaged skin in a process called dermal remodeling.

Microneedling can be a good option for treating the following skin concerns:

  • Acne scarring
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Surgical scars
  • Enlarged pores
  • Burns
  • Stretch marks

We may use microneedling together with other topical skin treatments to help serums penetrate more deeply.

The best candidates for microneedling are people in good overall health who want treatment for scars, hyperpigmentation, acne, and wrinkles.

People who have wound healing issues, current infections, or bleeding disorders are not the best candidates, but we can work together to find the treatment option that works for your needs.

Microneedling Benefits

One of the most important microneedling benefits is that people with hyperpigmentation or melasma can still get this treatment. Unlike laser therapies, microneedling does not use heat during the treatment, making it appropriate for people with skin pigmentation issues.

Microneedling relies on your own body's healing powers, delivering natural and gradual results. For people who don't want to dramatically change the way they look from one day to the next, it can be the right choice.

Microneedling is also a more affordable option than many laser treatments.

Preparing for the Microneedling Procedure

At our consultation, we will get your full medical history, as well as a list of all of the medications you take. If you have taken Accutane in the past six months, you may not be able to receive the procedure. Let us know about any previous cosmetic procedures you have undergone and what results you achieved.

To prepare for your microneedling appointment, you will need to stop taking blood-thinning medications and supplements like ibuprofen, aspirin, fish oil, and vitamin E. Remember to always consult with your primary physician before stopping any medications.

Leading up to your appointment, we will ask you to avoid abrasive skin care products as well as any procedures like chemical peels or microdermabrasion for at least a week. You should also stay out of the direct sun without protection because UV rays can make your skin more sensitive.

We also recommend you avoid waxing, electrolysis, and similar hair removal options for a few days before the microneedling procedure. At least two weeks before the treatment, don't get Botox or fillers. You should also avoid alcohol.

The Microneedling Procedure and Recovery Process

We will ask you to come to the appointment with a clean face. Don't wear makeup or apply lotions or creams. We will wash your face with an antiseptic and apply a thick layer of numbing cream.

We will then use the Rejuvapen, which contains tiny needles that perform the small wounds to your skin.

Once we finish the procedure, you are free to return to your day.

There is no real downtime with microneedling, but we do recommend you stay out of the sun for a few days and avoid wearing makeup for at least 24 hours. You also want to avoid exercise that makes you sweat.

For at least two weeks, avoid abrasive exfoliating products or procedures.

We recommend you avoid alcohol, smoking, and caffeine for a few days after the procedure. Instead, you should drink lots of water to keep your skin hydrated.

You can start seeing some results within a week of the procedure. After three or four weeks, collagen production should increase, and results will be even more noticeable.

Most patients see the best results with one to three treatment sessions spread out over a few months. To treat stretch marks or sagging skin, you may need up to six sessions.
