Can Dermal Fillers Offer Natural-Looking Skin Rejuvenation?

November 16, 2022 by A Younger You

Dermal Filler

There are more options than ever to restore a youthful appearance to your skin. However, many patients who want to avoid invasive procedures don't know enough about one of the most effective and accessible anti-aging treatments: dermal fillers.

As with most aesthetic treatments, patients achieve the best results from dermal filler injections when they are performed by skilled professionals who understand their goals. A Younger You Medical Spa is dedicated to helping all of our patients achieve optimal results from their dermal fillers.

As a result, patients in Waukesha, Milwaukee, and New Berlin seek out our care at our Brookfield and Burlington, WI, offices.

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are gel-like injectables approved by the FDA to smooth skin and restore volume. There are four main categories of dermal fillers, each defined by their primary active ingredient:

  • Hyaluronic acid
  • Calcium hydroxylapatite
  • Poly-L-lactic acid
  • Polymethyl-methacrylate

Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are the most popular, delivering dramatic results with no downtime.

What's the Difference Between Botox and Dermal Fillers?

Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport are neuromodulators, not dermal fillers. These injectable treatments stop communication between the nerves and the muscles in the treatment area so that the muscles move less and stop forming lines.

Neuromodulators work on dynamic wrinkles, which develop due to facial expressions. In contrast, dermal fillers offer skin rejuvenation by lifting and plumping the skin, filling lines and wrinkles while restoring volume. Dermal fillers treat static lines and wrinkles that remain on your face regardless of your expression.

How Do I Know Which Type of Dermal Filler I Need?

Choosing the best type of dermal filler to achieve your aesthetic goals requires an expert consultation with our team. For the most natural results, we may recommend using more than one type of filler or combining a dermal filler with a neuromodulator to meet your skin rejuvenation goals.

Each dermal filler is formulated to target specific concerns, so understanding the difference in the types of dermal filler can help narrow down your options.

Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

Hyaluronic acid is a humectant the body naturally produces, so it's already present in your skin and cartilage. These fillers use a bioidentical synthetic form of hyaluronic acid to keep skin looking hydrated, plump, and smooth.

Dermal fillers made with hyaluronic acid reduce depressions in the skin from scars or lines and can improve the skin's contour and volume. They are effective treatments for many skin concerns, including:

  • Acne scars
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Marionette lines
  • Glabellar lines
  • Loss of cheek volume
  • Redefining the lip border
  • Smoker's lines
  • Worry lines across the forehead

The Restylane line of dermal fillers uses hyaluronic acid as its primary ingredient. Most of these fillers last between six and twelve months.

Calcium Hydroxylapatite Fillers

Calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) is a mineral-like compound found in human bones. When CaHA is part of a dermal filler, the calcium particles are suspended in a thick gel. As the gel slowly dissolves in the skin, the microscopic calcium particles can stimulate collagen production for longer-lasting, natural-looking results.

CaHA fillers are biosynthetic, so they do not include animal products. They target more significant signs of aging, including:

  • Moderate to severe nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and frown lines
  • Loss of volume and contour to the face
  • Facial wasting in patients taking certain medications

Radiesse is a premier CaHA-based filler. These fillers are longer-lasting, with results maintained for about a year to eighteen months.

Poly-L-lactic Acid Filler

Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) filler is a biostimulatory filler whose primary purpose is to trigger the body's natural collagen production. PLLA is biodegradable and nontoxic, and it has a 40-year history as a suture material.

PLLA fillers are especially effective in treating the lower face and are a preferred treatment for filling laugh lines, plumping thinning lips, and smoothing deep nasolabial folds. By stimulating the body's natural healing processes, PLLA fillers offer impressive, dramatic skin rejuvenation results.

Unlike other dermal fillers, PLLA doesn't immediately plump and smooth skin. Since its primary function is to stimulate collagen production, results appear gradually. Patients who seek a more discreet treatment benefit from the slow restoration of their skin through PLLA fillers.

Most patients require three treatments to achieve their desired results, which can take four to six weeks to appear. PLLA fillers are long-lasting, with results visible for over two years. We offer the only FDA-approved PLLA filler, Sculptra Aesthetic.

Polymethyl-Methacrylate Microsphere Fillers

Polymethyl-methacrylate (PMMA) microsphere fillers use a synthetic biocompatible substance that remains under the skin indefinitely.

These fillers combine collagen with the microspheres to restore structure and fullness to the skin. They are often used to treat pitted-out scars and deeper wrinkles, such as nasolabial folds, or to add volume to thin lips.

Since PMMA fillers are long-lasting, we often underfill on the first treatment and add more as desired to help you achieve the best results. PMMA treatments are similar to PLLA, offering collagen stimulation benefits. However, PMMA fillers provide more immediate results.

We offer Bellafill, the only FDA-approved PMMA filler for acne scars. Bellafill skin rejuvenation treatments can last up to five years.
